In my Identity Systems class, we got the opportunity to design a fictional identity. Some students chose super hero or science fiction identities like Tony Stark's Stark Industries, but I decided to go with Stanley Kubrick's the Shining. The entire movie is centered around the Overlook hotel, yet it lacks a fully-formed identity like The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The Overlook Hotel was established in 1908, the heart of the Art Nouveau period. Whenever I think of Art Nouveau, I think of the eary typography first developed in this period.
After knowing the letterforms I wanted, I decided to letter the logo, as opposed to choosing a perfect typeface for my vision. I absolutely loved creating these letterforms in Illustrator.
